HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Cavite State University offered the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program in 1997 to strengthen its thrust in the field of Agriculture. It was also in accordance with the Agenda for Development of the then, Don Severino Agricultural College.

Initially, the program was under the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Environment and Natural Resources. In August 2000, the program was handled by the newly formed College of Veterinary Medicine.

Faculty of the college are graduates from the premier veterinary education institution. Most members have finished graduate degrees. The faculty members are engaged in full-time teaching, research and extension activities.

Structurally, the College has two main buildings: the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Building and the Administration and Academic Building, with the former housing the Animal Clinic and fully air-conditioned laboratories. The Animal Clinic serves as a venue for students to acquire hands-on experience in disease diagnosis, treatment and control in companion, exotic and farm animals to augment and validate their theoretical knowledge in veterinary medicine, surgery and pathology. Special instructions are given in veterinary therapeutics, pre and post-operative care, diagnostic technique, prescription writing, case record keeping, hospital administration and veterinarian-client relationship.

Furthermore, the CVM utilizes the CvSU farm in teaching farm animal restraint, dosing, preventive management and surgery. The farm also provides CVM with experimental animals and specimens for instruction and research.

Aside from the primary function of instruction, the CVM serves as a units for veterinary research and extension. It has established research and extension linkages with other government and private agencies such as the Philippine Carabao Center, Dairy Training Research Institute, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Cavite City Botanical and Zoological Park, Center for Philippine Raptors, Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Batangas Dairy Cooperative, University of the Philippines in Los Baños and private institutions, farms and feedmills. These agencies also serve as venues of learning for our veterinary interns.
