Parents of Day Care students of Brgy. Lallana, Trece Martires City, Cavite participated in a Gender Sensitivity Seminar last June 20, 2019 held at the Covered Court of the said barangay. The activity is part of the Memorandum of Agreement between the University and Brgy. Lallana.
Ms. Shirlyn M. Rom-Leachon started with the objectives of Gender and Development as well as the services offered by the university. She enumerated the differences between sex and gender and involved the participants by asking them of the things only a woman can do and vice versa. Ms. Lailanie Leachon, BNS, answered that women can bear children and can breast feed babies while men cannot.
During the discussion of the gender division of labor, Ms. Rom-Leachon explained that the work of men and women can be categorized as productive, reproductive, and community activities. Productive activities are the paid activities done outside the home and in public arena while reproductive activities are the unpaid activities done inside the home. Meanwhile, community activities include the collective organization of social activities and services in the community.
Moreover, the “Impossible Dream” video clip was also presented showing the issues faced by women like double-multiple workload, common situation of a family where both parents work outside the home, and economic marginalization with women being paid less than a husband who is devoting the same number of hours of work. In addition, all the household chores remain as woman’s responsibility.
