The 2025 Cavite State University (CvSU) Women’s Month Celebration marks a significant milestone in the ongoing pursuit of gender equality and women’s empowerment.
This year’s celebration coincides with two historic events: the 50th anniversary of the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) and the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA). Through this, CvSU continues to champion the empowerment of women, fostering an environment where gender rights are recognized, upheld, and strengthened.
Associate Professor Ma. Cristina J. Baesa delivered the opening message, emphasizing the theme Aangat ang Bukas – Strengthening Women’s Rights Through the Magna Carta. She highlighted the global underrepresentation of women in the workforce, noting that only 40% are employed, and with just 28.2% holding management positions. At the current pace, she said that achieving gender equality could take 140 years. She underscored the importance of the Magna Carta of Women (RA 9710) in addressing these disparities by promoting and protecting women’s rights. Concluding her message, she reaffirmed her commitment as a GAD advocate and called for collective efforts to improve the welfare of women and children.
Ms. Charlotte Ann P. Tolentino, an Arnis athlete from the Philippine National Team, discussed the challenges that women face in male-dominated fields, including gender bias, economic disparities, and cultural stereotypes. She highlighted barriers like harassment, lack of mentorship, and patriarchy, which limit women’s opportunities. Ms. Tolentino emphasized the importance of skills development, education, mentorship, self-advocacy, and leadership in overcoming these challenge, and encouraged women to break stereotypes and create lasting change.
Mr. Richard P. Perez, in-charge of Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation for CvSU MOVE KATROPA, tackled the crucial role of men in advancing gender equality. He emphasized that gender equality is a societal issue that benefits families, workplaces, and communities. Using a bicycle analogy, he illustrated how progress is hindered when one gender is marginalized. Mr. Perez highlighted the need for men, especially those in leadership roles, to actively support gender equality. He outlined key actions, including sharing domestic responsibilities, encouraging their partners’ aspirations, educating children on equality, advocating for fair treatment, and supporting women in leadership.
Dr. Jessie Anne T. Demetillo, OIC of the Business Affairs and Marketing Office, expressed gratitude to Mr. Leonard V. Paunil for moderating the webinar and to the honored speakers, Ms. Tolentino and Mr. Perez. She also acknowledged the contributions of GADRC OIC Dr. Ma. Cynthia R. Dela Cruz, university officials, faculty, staff, and students. In her closing remarks, Dr. Demetillo emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of empowerment and equality as outlined in the Magna Carta of Women. She called for collective action to uphold dignity, ensure equal protection, and advocate for gender equality, encouraging collaboration between men and women in advancing women’s rights.
