In a meaningful celebration of the National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, the Gender and Development Resource Center organized a transformative webinar on August 31, 2023. The event, which took place via Zoom video conferencing and Facebook Live, brought together experts, educators, and the community to discuss the importance of breastfeeding and its legal and health implications.
Dr. Evelyn M. Del Mundo, Dean of the College of Nursing, highlighted the profound impact of breastfeeding on maternal and infant health, emphasizing the need for a culture that champions the well-being of mothers and newborns.
Ms. Charmaine Kelly Posadas-Mesina, Program Coordinator of Midwifery, College of Medicine, discussed the legal framework supporting breastfeeding, highlighting the distinctions of RA 10028, the Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009, and Executive Order No. 51, the National Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, Breastmilk Supplements, and other Related Products. She emphasized the importance of protecting infants’ health and nutrition by promoting breastfeeding as the optimal and natural way to nourish infants.
Dr. Elaine Marie O. Madamba-Reyes, a Fellow at the Philippine Pediatric Society, College of Medicine, highlighted the critical connection between breastfeeding and nutrition, emphasizing breastfeeding as a holistic and natural approach to infant nutrition, providing a multitude of benefits for both the baby and the mother.
Dr. Eleanor J. Galvez, Dean of the College of Medicine, expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort to raise awareness and commitment to supporting breastfeeding as a cornerstone of maternal and child health. Dr. Trisha C. Crisostomo, GAD Coordinator, College of Medicine moderated this webinar.
