The Cavite State University’s Gender and Development Resource Center (GADRC) successfully conducted a transformative event titled “Transforming Breast Cancer Awareness to the Foreground with Inclusive Initiatives” on October 14, 2024, via Zoom video conferencing and Facebook Live.
This online gathering brought together voices from healthcare, advocacy, and academia to foster a more inclusive and compassionate approach to breast cancer awareness.
Dr. Gerald B. Natanauan, Assistant Dean of the College of Medicine, opened the event with a powerful message on the need for breast cancer awareness that reaches everyone, regardless of gender, background, or socioeconomic status. Dr. Natanauan emphasized that transforming awareness into inclusive and impactful action is essential to saving lives and reaching underserved communities. His words set the tone for a day of learning, collaboration, and commitment to making breast cancer education accessible and meaningful for all.
Throughout the session, expert speakers delved into crucial topics such as the importance of early detection, the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities, and the psychosocial impact of breast cancer on patients and their families. Dr. Rosalyn C. Panao’s presentation, “Breast Cancer 101,” provided essential insights into risk factors, symptoms, and screening practices, while she also discussed the disparities in access to care in low-income areas. She emphasized that breast cancer awareness should include a commitment to breaking down barriers and improving healthcare access across communities.
Ms. Jean Camille M. Zamora spoke about the psychosocial needs of breast cancer patients and survivors, highlighting the importance of mental health support, community solidarity, and compassionate care. She reminded participants that healing goes beyond the physical, stressing the need for supportive environments where patients can share their fears, find solace, and regain their strength. Her discussion of support groups and counseling as essential resources resonated deeply, emphasizing that no one should face cancer alone.
Ms. Kieth S. Sixon, Associate Professor II at the College of Nursing, discussed “Advocacy Strategies for Inclusive Breast Cancer Awareness” in the Philippines. She highlighted that 65% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed in advanced stages due to limited access to screening, especially in rural areas. She emphasized the importance of advocacy in changing this narrative, stating that initiatives aimed at reducing stigma, increasing accessibility, and lowering costs can significantly improve early detection rates.
Dr. Evelyn M. Del Mundo, Dean of the College of Nursing, closed the event with an uplifting statement that tied together the day’s observations, highlighting that transforming breast cancer awareness is not just a goal but a necessity. She emphasized that inclusive breast cancer initiatives are about building a compassionate community where everyone has access to the resources and support they need.
Through this webinar, the CvSU GADRC has paved the way for a more inclusive approach to breast cancer awareness—one that truly leaves no one behind.
