The Cavite State University (CvSU) Gender and Development Resource Center (GADRC) sponsored a Training on Disaster Preparedness on Fire Drill for the members of the Indang Association of Persons with Disability, Inc. (IAPWDI) on August 24, at the CvSU-GADRC Babaylan Training Room in Indang, Cavite.

IAPWDI President Mr. Florian H. de Borja delivered the welcome message where he expressed his hope that everyone would gain valuable insights from the training, particularly in the effective usage of fire extinguishers.

College of Criminal Justice faculty member Mr. Marco Victor Mendoza discussed Fire Safety for Person with Disability, with some strategies for minimizing the risk of fire in various scenarios. He also tackled fire prevention methods and preparedness tailored to different types of disabilities.

Mr. Mendoza emphasized the importance of establishing a clear evacuation plan within one’s residence and practicing the procedures in the event of a fire. He highlighted the necessity for all family members to be actively involved in the plan’s creation and execution. Furthermore, he stressed that regular reviews and updates to the plan should be carried out in response to any changes in the household.

Moreover, Mr. Mendoza demonstrated to the participants the emergency security transfer techniques such as the piggy back technique, the firefighter’s lift, the cradle carry, the fore and aft carry, blanket drag, and chair lift. Additionally, he provided a step-by-step demonstration on how to properly use a fire extinguisher. He also advised the participants not to panic in the presence of fire, but to instead follow the simple process: pull the pin, aim at the fire’s base, squeeze the lever, and sweep the extinguisher side to side.
