As part of the university-wide celebration of the National Women’s Month, the GAD Resource Center conducted an orientation on Gender Sensitivity, Magna Carta of Women and Safe Spaces Act for all CvSU officials, faculty members, employees and students. The orientation was conducted on March 28, 2022 via Zoom and FB Live.
Dr. Hernando D. Robles, University President, in his opening remarks, stressed the importance of such a program as we commemorate National Women’s Month and emphasized that CvSU would continue to push for and support the GADRC in all their initiatives. He urged everyone to create engagement with all sectors by taking advantage of the seminars and webinars offered by GADRC.
Mr. King David J. Agreda, GAD Coordinator, Cavite City Campus, and President, CvSU MOVE KATROPA explained the fundamentals of GAD orientation. He offered a quick review of how the Philippines reduced the gender gap, as well as discrimination and inequality in our culture. He also provided a statistical data on violence against women and children. Moreover, the discussion focused on the dismantling the myths in sex and gender and listed 10 different myths.
Ms. Arlene L. Estrada, GAD Coordinator, Trece Martires City Campus, spoke about the Magna Carta of Women (MCW) and highlighted what constitutes discrimination under the MCW. Moreover, she discussed the government’s role and discussed the MCW’s significant provisions. She ended her talk by explaining how the MCW may be used to enhance women’s and teachers’ rights.
Atty. Wilson A. Legaspi, a Faculty Member of the College of Criminal Justice, spoke on the Safe Spaces Act. He highlighted gender-based sexual harassment in public spaces, gender-based harassment in public transportation vehicles and online sexual harassment and their corresponding punishments.
Ms. Lolita G. Herrera, Director, Finance Management Office, made the closing remarks. She stated that GAD is very evident and can be felt even without mentioning the awards they have gotten. She advised everyone to support these types of seminars and webinars as well as recognize GADRC’s advocacy, because element of recall is very important. She ended her remarks with this statement: “Never can we completely claim that all of us are GAD champions unless and until we are aware about GAD principles and regulations associated with it. Never can we truly claim that we are and can be protected unless and until we continue to be cognizant of the GAD notions and rules associated with it. And, never can we properly complain about being a victim unless and until we believe anything in GAD principles and laws related to it was violated.”
