Aiming to bring coffee education in the digital platform, the National Coffee Research Development and Extension Center (NCRDEC) hosted a nine-part Coffee B.R.E.A.K. (Breakthrough on Research and Extension for the Advancement of Knowledge of Stakeholders) from July to December 2020.

The said series is a complete package of topics on coffee from history and production to processing, business and marketing, and health scheduled every month.

The following are the topics covered in the webinar: Characterization and Identification of Cultivated Coffee in the Philippines by Dr. Miriam D. Baltazar, research unit head of NCRDEC (July 30); Building up the Chemistry: Investigating the Science behind Coffee Processing by Dr. Ruel M. Mojica, Vice President for Research and Extension (August 20); Declaration: Communicating Coffee Products through Branding and Packaging by Mr. Rene Jethro Abary of the Packaging Technology Division under the DOST- Industrial Technology Development Institute (August 27); Pursuing Viable Coffee Business Ventures by Mr. . Michael Harris Conlin, President and CEO Henry&Sons Trading and Manufacturing Company, Inc (September 3); Meet the Parents: Tracing the Roots of Philippine Coffee by Ms. Bel Castro, Assistant Dean of the  College of Hospitality Management at Enderun College (October 15); Nurturing the Connection: Growing Coffee through Various Propagation Methods by Mr. Mr. Rodrigo H. Diloy, Education Program Specialist II of NCRDEC (November 11); Time for Labels: Accreditation and Certification of  Coffee Nurseries by Mr. Danilo T. Dannug and Mr. Earl Austin Aromin of DA- Bureau of Plant Industry (November 25); Mutual Understanding: How Coffee Affects Your Health by Ms. Josefina T. Gonzales, Science Research Specialist II at DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (December 8); and Commitment: Road to Having Your Own Coffee Shop by Mr. John Paul Buhain, Café Management Trainor at Barista & Coffee Academy of Asia (December 15).

Also featured in the sessions were enterprises offering local coffee products. These include Kape Lorenzo, Coffee Geney, Café de Cabuyao, MAR’s Coffee and Herbs, RIALITY coffee and Aguinaldo Blend Coffee.

The said webinars were conducted by CISCO Webex and streamed live on NCRDEC’s Facebook page. Moreover, replays were then uploaded on NRDEC’s Youtube account known as NCRDEC TV.

Participants of the sessions include academicians, employees of government agencies and local government units, members of non- government organizations, representatives of private enterprises, and coffee enthusiasts. (AJMagcamit)
