The Gender and Development Resource Center conducted an Orientation on Republic Act 7277, otherwise known as the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons via zoom teleconferencing among the officers and members of Indang Association of Person’s with Disability, Inc on April 16, 2021. The webinar aims to inform the participants of their rights and privileges as persons with disability.

Ms. Marie Shiela A. Haloc, RSW, Disability Affairs Officer IV, Cavite Provincial Disability Affairs Office served as the resource speaker for Republic Act 7277. Ms. Haloc first explained some of the disability barriers for the PWD and how they can overcome these disability barriers. Afterwards, Ms. Haloc proceeded to the main topic, which is the Magna Carta or Disabled Persons, the main focus of her presentation is the Right and Privileges of a person with disability when it comes to employment, education, health, auxiliary social services, telecommunications, accessibility, social and political rights. The last topic she explained pertains to the special discounts and privileges enjoyed by a person with disability.

In addition, she also gave a brief discussion on some laws that amended RA 7277, these laws are the RA 9442 or the Provision of Special Discounts and Privileges to PWD’s, RA 10524 or the act Expanding the Positions Reserved for Persons with Disability, RA 10070 or Establishing Institutional Mechanism to Ensure the Implementation of Programs and Services for Persons With Disabilities In Every Province, City and Municipality, RA 10754 or the Act Expanding The Benefits And Privileges Of Persons With Disability (PWD), and lastly the RA 11228 or the Act Providing for the Mandatory PhilHealth Coverage for all Persons With Disability (PWDs).

At the end of her presentation, some of the participants raised questions like if they can send a letter to an establishment and ask them to comply with the accessibility code. They also asked if it would be possible for them to apply the incentives for private corporation to the government. (JRD Emelo)
